So this game has finally jumped from the simple "Turned Based Strategy game" to a now "Old school Final Fantasy game". How ironic is it, knowing Final Fantasy XV is now longer turned based and Pokemon still rages on to follow it's coat tails, when both companies are housed in Japan.
Oh Japan, how much I adore your tomfoolery.
Final Fantasy hasn't had the old style Turn-Based RPG style for quite a long while. if you've been paying attention to the latest Final Fantasy's they've been nothing like Pokemon turn-based. Along with pulling away from it more and more. Pokemon still uses the turn by turn just adds more enemies.
Final Fantasy also has been using Active Time Battle for awhile. Which is completely different than Pokemon's turn based fights. Unless you turn that off, which most people don't turn off ATB.

Your model is flawed. The way you described X, it is actually a plane. X is left & right, Y is up and down, Z is in and out (of the screen).
The X and Y are actually references to X and Y Chromosomes. See: the DNA helix in the Japanese logo.
